Priceless historical perspective on Rightwing Doom-mongering

An update from “Ernie”:

The imminent demise or collapse of our country into tyranny has been standard extreme right rhetoric for many decades.

Right-wing extremists occupy a pervasive doom-shaped environment which they claim their unique analytical skills equips only them to properly understand.

My new webpage (link below) provide examples for historical context:

A few “money quotes”:

“The Last Chance To Save Our Country” by C.C. Crow in the 2/15/44 issue of “Crow’s Pacific Coast Lumber Digest”

“It is entirely possible that the coming election may be the last free one that the United States of America will see. Certainly, if there are to be four more years of blind spending and the further broadening of a deficit which already has us on the very brink of financial disaster, will that not mean ruination for every man, woman and child within our borders….When this day arrives it is not impossible that Mrs. Roosevelt will be traveling around the country compelling white people to do washing for negroes so as to eliminate all traces of racial inequality…We are on the very threshold of Communism. Whether we are dragged through for a return to paganism and Christianity’s greatest setback of all time depends entirely upon the individual effort that is put into this, our last chance, by patriotic citizens who still revere the Stars and Stripes.”

Billy James Hargis, 6/18/65 article entitled “The Most Terrifying Report I’ve Ever Read”:

“An Air Force contract (No. AF 49 (638-1411) dated April 1965 with North American Aviation, Inc. has been called to my attention. It contains a diabolical projected plan to disarm the United States and abolish our sovereignty by 1976. This plan is a self-styled scenario of gradual surrender to world government with Communist Russia, going as far as the listing of the wars that are to be fought between now and 1976, the world leaders to be assassinated, the governments to be overthrown, and listing the actual year for each event.”

Robert Mathews, from 1973 Arizona Sons of Liberty flyer captioned “General Notes For The Patriot Soldier”:

“This year and next are probably going to be the most critical years in our nation’s history. Everything is going fine for the masterminds of the Conspiracy, and they have only a few more steps before their conquest of the entire world is final. The last few steps that the masterminds plan to enact involve a depression, a famine, and some type of world-wide political shake-up with one of the end results being occupation of this once grand land by forces of the United Nations.”

As Ambrose Bierce wrote in The Devil’s Dictionary, “There is nothing new under the sun but there are lots of old things we don’t know.”

  1. Just FYI, that Air Force “contract” has been declassified (although the date on the cover is August 1965, not April):

    It’s quite long, but — surprise, surprise! — the contents don’t seem to match Billy James Hargis’s summary. It’s an analysis of the implications of various arms control proposals for US security, not a blueprint for a transition to world government.

  2. Yes, but see, herein lies the beauty of the “the country is perpetually on the brink of disaster/tyranny/communism/whatever” mindset. The right-wing doomsayers can simply dismiss this criticism by claiming that it has only been their eternal vigilance that has prevented these previous dire scenarios from coming to pass.

      1. M’kay. I read that one. Reread it. Processing…
        We all must believe something. There is a threshold when we believe something as fact. Perception and past experience somehow plays a part. To have conspiracies, especially those on the “right”, recycle themselves there must be a formula. Propaganda X? There is also the idea of linear time. I digress.

        One great way for a speaker to lash out is to us the ambiguos “they”. It does not specificly target and allows the audience imagination to fill in the “they”. Even using “leftist” or “righty-tighty?” is a form of amorphous blob. That must be one rule, use only huge groups. Specify only people that self-designate. It may be a perverse check and balance. The sane can censor the haters, the haters can censor the sane. The third party group has no liability in this way. This is how Beck’s hands can remain clean if “someone takes his message the wrong way”.

        The funny part is there are some major paradoxes that occur when you travel from the macro-media to the micro-media inside a person’s individual beliefs. For example: A man told me this, “We need to pull outta all these countries. They hate us there anyway. We already feed half the world anyway.” A very screw’em’muslims attitude. Anti-Obama. Hates liberals to the core. Very bigoted. I took the ball and ran with it.
        “Punkin’, if you saw a woman being raped and you had your gun, you’d shoot’em. If a child was on the interstate without a jacket and alone, you’d stop. Why? Because you’re a good man. But that’s what our boys’ r’doin. If it takes a hundred dead soldiers to save one little girl, they’d volunteer. If they have to feed a thousand to make the difference for one or two, that is what we’d do. It’s like welfare. Yes, most will abuse it but it is there for those few that need it and won’t. Because we are good people. The hard part is that if we feed half the world, then read how our Ag ruins the water and kills the fish in the ocean, what do we do? If we leave those countries, what does that mean? If we stop feeding the starving, but we coulda’, what does that makes us?” Has any enviro explored where all that grain goes? Has any NRA member realized they support organic, free range meat whenever the murder Bambi? Lol

    1. The term “censorship” comes from The Latin, censere “to give as one’s opinion, to assess.” The Roman censors were magistrates who took the census count and served as assessors and inspectors of morals and conduct.

      In contrast to that straightforward definition from Roman times, contemporary usage offers no agreed-upon definition of the term or when to use it. Indeed, even whether the word itself applies to a given controversy in the arts is often vigorously contested. -From Culture Shock

      By definition Arthur Goldwag IS the censor and he will remove things he finds objectionable. If one wears a “F-U2” t-shirt to a restraunt and they ask you to leave, you have been censored because the majority of the patrons find you objectionable. A lot of “identity” is worn on the outside non-verbally communicating what is on the inside. Therefore, if you want the biscuits and gravy, wear a button-down. If you are offended being asked to leave or are clueless why as to why, you just might be a bad guy and haven’t looked in a societal mirror lately. If the reflection is not you, then there is a deeper internal issue. That is why cults, armies, prisoners and gangs wear the same things. They are removing the individual identity and supplanting another to work from the outside in. Many enjoy this because they did not like who they were. With a change of costume doors open and a different set of players can begin. Because one plays their part, they must think that part and identity begins to change once more. Prisoners reform, soldiers gain bravery, cults make zealots and gangs commit cruelty unrecognizable by their 5 year old selves.

    “From a careful and realistic study of the mountainous pile of evidence that is there for all to see, certain terrifying conclusions are objectively inescapable.

    Among them are:
    (1) The Communists are winning their large victories, as they always have, through the cumulative effect of small gains;
    (2) They make these gains chiefly through the conniving assistance of many of the very diplomats and officials who are supposed to be opposing them;
    (3) Communist influences are now in almost complete working control of our government;
    (4) And hence, the United States Government is today, as it has been for many years, the most important and powerful single force promoting the world-wide Communist advance.”

    [A Confidential Report To Members Of The Council of The John Birch Society – minutes of 1/9/60 meeting held at Union League Club in Chicago IL, page 1-2; minutes signed by Robert Welch.]

    Furthermore, Welch continued:

    “Today, gentlemen, I can assure you, without the slightest doubt in my own mind, that the takeover at the top is, for all practical purposes, virtually complete. Whether you like it or not, or whether you believe it or not, our Federal Government is already, literally in the hands of the Communists.” [Ibid, page 2]

    “In our two states with the largest population, New York and California…already the two present Governors are almost certainly actual Communists…Our Congress now contains a number of men like Adam Clayton Powell of New York and Charles Porter of Oregon, who are certainly actual Communists, and plenty more who are sympathetic to Communist purposes for either ideological or opportunistic reasons.” [Ibid, page 7]
    [Note: the reference to Governors refers to Edmund G. Brown of California and Nelson Rockefeller of New York.]

    “In the Senate, there are men like Stephen Young of Ohio, and Wayne Morse of Oregon, McNamara of Michigan, and Clifford Case of New Jersey and Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and Estes Kefauver of Tennessee and John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, whom it is utter folly to think of as just liberals. Every one of those men is either an actual Communist or so completely a Communist sympathizer or agent that it makes no practical difference…” [Ibid, page 8]

    “Our Supreme Court, dominated by Earl Warren and Felix Frankfurter and Hugo Black, is so visibly pro-Communist that no argument is even needed…And our federal courts below that level…are in many cases just as bad.” [Ibid, page 8]

    “Our State Department is loaded with Communists from top to bottom, to the extent that our roll call of Ambassadors almost sounds like a list somebody has put together to start a Communist front.” … [Ibid, page 8]

    “It is estimated from many reliable sources that from 70% to 90% of the responsible personnel in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare are Communists. Our Central Intelligence Agency under Allen Dulles is nothing more or less than an agency to promote Communism throughout the world…Almost all the other Departments are loaded with Communists and Communist sympathizers. And this generalization most specifically does include our whole Defense Department.” [Ibid, page 8]

  4. Is the real conspiracy of the doomers to foster a terror in the laymen or sociopathic megalomaniac in the audience to implement an act of violence far enough from the mouthpiece to give the speaker plausible deniability?

    Is media manipulation illegal or morally unjust? But if all media is manipulated by the artist (Animal Farm) what is it but acceptable pieces? How can we expect anything we do not experience ourselves to be true? Was there really a shooting at Ft. Hood? Did we really land on the moon? Can we accept sacred texts or are they the results of an interpretation of “experts” looking for answers at an enigma like Stonehinge. Putting faith in it is to put faith in the mortal Vizer that created the story. How much faith do we put in a stranger? James Ray had many put their lives and money into him for his. This must be a fundamental construct to the human mind somehow.

  5. Jesse presents an entirely reasonable question:
    “How can we expect anything we do not experience ourselves to be true?”

    My long experience dealing with right-wing conspiracy theorists is that, ultimately, all their assertions devolve into epistemological dilemmas — i.e. how is truth ascertained and verified?

    I have been repeatedly ridiculed in conspiracy circles because I proposed adoption of standard rules of evidence and logic. But when I ask the conspiracy adherents what alternative they propose–they have none.

    In essence, conspiracy theorists are fiction writers. Like all fiction writers they want to put thoughts and motives into the minds and hearts of their characters (villains) and they then want to move their story along pre-determined lines.

    Anything which contradicts their plot-line is immediately discarded, ridiculed, de-valued, or suppressed.

    Because they do not accept normal rules of evidence or logic (or ANY for that matter), it is impossible to carry on any sort of ongoing rational dialogue with them.

    That is why in my article about the nature and purpose of conspiracy theories, I point out that the actual text of any conspiracy narrative is irrelevant. Instead, one must view their narrative as a primal scream against their perceived sense of impotence.
